GOP Presidential front-runner Rudy Giuliani has now backed off his initial statements that his wife would be a Cabinet member or regularly attend high-level meetings. Instead, Giuliani asserted that it would be him who showed up in dresses, presiding over Cabinet meetings in drag.

“America’s Mayor” explained that dressing¬†as a woman would not only appeal to the “cross-over” vote, but would¬†help unite¬†the disparate elements of¬†the¬†GOP: “both the more socially moderate Log Cabin¬†Republicans, and the evangelicals like Ted Haggard who are really closet drag queens.”
Giuliani also indicated that if he wins the Republican nomination, he’ll¬†campaign in drag in the general election, in order to steal some of the women’s vote away from¬†expected Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.
Since¬†Giuliani’s campaign¬†touts his reputation for toughness and leadership on 9/11,¬†pundits believe that he’s trying to posture himself as the U.S. version of Margaret Thatcher, only less attractive. Indeed, campaign insiders say one of Giuliani’s first acts as¬†President would be to flex his muscles by ridding Baghdad’s streets of all Shiite squeegee men.

However, some conservatives still believe that¬†Giuliani’s proclivity for dressing in drag might still be a drag on his prospects. As one evangelical leader put it, “the three wives are¬†bad enough, but what if it turns out that Rudy has¬†had three husbands as well.”
