Tim Hardaway, the retired basketball star who recently made blatantly anti-gay remarks, suddenly finds himself leading in the polls for the 2008 GOP Presidential nomination.

Hardaway, who flatly said that he “hates gay people,” was enthusiastically embraced by the Republican base, which was happy to finally hear some “straight talk” on the issue of homosexuals.
As Rush Limbaugh said on his radio show, “candidates like
McCain, Giuliani and Romney are all suspect on the issue of gay rights. But Hardaway’s a guy who not only wants to ban gay marriage, but ban gays altogether.”
The Reverends Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell also endorsed Hardaway for President, claiming that this proves that they’re not prejudiced against African- Americans.¬† “As long as a man knows what to do with his foreskin,” Falwell explained, “we’re not going¬†to judge him by the color of his skin.”
This development had the other contenders in the GOP race scrambling to maintain their own base of support.¬†For example, John McCain announced¬†that he would immediately¬†ban¬†the playing of¬†show tunes on his campaign bus, the¬†famous “Straight Talk Express.”
Appearing on Larry King, Rudy Giuliani asserted¬†that¬†he wouldn’t personally ban gays the way he did squeegee men in the streets of New York. However, Giuliani said that he would appoint “strict constructionists” to the Supreme Court, who would “banish gays on the basis that, like abortion, they’re not mentioned in the Constitution.”

Although the gay community was understandably upset about the rank stupidity and ignorance of Hardaway’s remarks, they still thought he would be no worse a¬†President than George W. Bush.¬† As the leader of one gay rights organization said, “at least¬†he would know the difference between a ’slam dunk’ and¬†a ‘flagrant foul’.”¬†¬†
